1. Sports Musings from Some Girl

I’m a huge sports fan (if ya didn’t know), so I decided to start a blog dedicated to all my random musings about all things sports. I also needed to find a creative outlet and continue to write so it doesn’t become stale…so this is my new project.

I’m pretty well-versed in all the four major ones — football, baseball, basketball and hockey, but I can talk others, as well.

I’m a die-hard Oakland Raider fan and obsessed San Jose Sharks fan, so be prepared to see many posts about them.

    Check it out please! Thanks!

  2. The super boy-ish side of me has come out in the past 24 hours or so. Most of my tweets yesterday were about the Sharks and Lakers/Cavs game, and I also managed to sneak in an @reply to Michael Bush’s question “why doesn’t flash work on ipad?”

My answer? “Because Steve Jobs hates Adobe/Flash”. Well, it’s true.

Additionally, I managed to have a pretty decent convo with one of my hockey buds on Facebook about the Sharks’ oh-so-terrible struggles right now. I mean, to the point where I’m even impressed with my hockey knowledge. I’ve fully admitted that I’m still learning the game (being that I didn’t really “grow up” watching it). I understand the basics, now it’s all about the nuances. Don’t believe me? Try me. Ask me anything about the team this season, and I’ll answer it as best as I can.

I think the fact that the conversation centered around the Sharks also helped my arguments tenfold. Ask me to argue for/against another team? Fugghadeaboutit. But I’ll get there soon enough :)

If you know me, you’d know that I am two EXTREMES of the gender spectrum. While, yes, I’m a sporty chick with a knack for understanding and enjoying team sports, I’m also an extreme girly girl who has a make-up collection that you would die for. Do you have the Urban Decay NAKED palette? Well, I do!

Many people describe my style as “funky”. I’ve never really been able to pinpoint what exactly my style is. I’ve always thought that I kind of emit a bohemian-rocker-chic vibe. I don’t really like to follow trends, nor do I like dressing like every other filipino girl out there. So that’s probably why my style looks like an amalgamation of the Olsen twins and Rihanna mixed in with a little Blair Waldorf for class. So I can see the funky label. I can dig it.

I thought it’d be cool to post some of my favorite things at the moment, style/beauty/fashion-wise. Here they are:

    • Essie’s Matte About You - The matte nail trend is so last year, and I have to say, I have a tendency to pick up on trends like a year after they arrive. But I don’t really care. Matte nails are so hot! Everyone wants their nails to be all shiny, but this is a really unique way to make your nails stand out from the crowd.
    • Bright Nail Polish - For the longest time, I wore really dark colors on my nails, deep, eggplant purple, black, dark maroon. Because, come on, dark nails are kind of sexy. But I think the more playful side has come out of me in the past few months. And, who else, my girl Rihanna in her “What’s My Name?” video totally inspired me. She has those periwinkle blue nails at one point, and I fell in love. Ever since then, bright nails have been my go-to at the salon. Right now, my nails are bright ocean blue. And matte :)
    • Korres Lip Butter - I’ve struggled for years to find the best chapstick for my dry lips. And while there are some products out there that suffice — i.e. Burt’s Bees, Lypsyl Lyp Moisturizer — NOTHING compares to Korres Lip Butter. My lips have never felt so soft. And the best part? They STAY soft. You don’t have to continue reapplying. I put on a little before I go to bed, then a little before I head out to work in the morning. It’s a godsend! And there’s a lot of different scents, too. I got the guava and pomegranate ones. Trust me…you MUST get it!
    • Tokidoki Perfetto Eyeliner - This thing is basically a permanent marker. For those gals constantly finding their liquid eyeliner sweating and melting off, I highly recommend this product. It’s a pen and goes on smoothly across your eyelid. And the best part? It doesn’t come off (well, when you use make-up remover it does). But seriously. Take my word for it.
    • Sephora Collection: I.T. Face Contour Brush - So, I just recently started to get into the habit of contouring my face. I use Mac Blush in Blunt, and then I use this brush. When I purchased it at the counter, the girl raved about it to me. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to start using it. It does not disappoint. If you ever need to contour your face, this is the brush to use.

That’s all for now, but they really are some of my favorites, at the moment. I also bought these awesome combat, vintage-looking boots, and I can’t wait to wear them. I would post a picture of them, but 1) I can’t find my camera and 2) my laptop is so extremely slow right now, I don’t think I can upload anything new to this thing or else I think my laptop will explode.

  3. [Flash 10 is required to watch video]

I knew my insanely, obssesive love for hockey, at the moment, isn’t random and has deeper roots. For one summer when I was younger, my cousins and I watched The Mighty Ducks (1, 2, and 3) repeatedly, while our obsession grew exponentially with each consecutive viewing. I kid you not, each of the 4 or 5 of us could recite scenes from the movies, verbatim — and with no shame. Yes, I still gladly embrace my nerd status to this day.

On that note, what a ridiculously, unreal game that was. It was one of the greatest games I’ve ever watched, of any sport. And I’ve watched A LOT of games. From Toews early goal to Parise’s tie goal with 24 secs remaining to (who else) Sidney Crosby scoring the game winning score in OT…you couldn’t have written a better script. This will be a Hollywood movie in the future, and when it’s made, we will all be able to say “I remember where I was when I watched this wonderful moment in sports history.” Regardless if you were American or Canadian, Blackhawks or Red Wings fan, Crosby lover or hater, the results shouldn’t diminish the fact that this was a game for the ages.

Congrats to Team USA! Coming into the tournament as HUGE underdogs, and now they’re walking out of it American Sports Stars, especially you, Ryan Miller. I may not have been cheering for USA outright (so sue me), but I was certainly not cheering against them. This team has absolutely nothing to hang their heads about. A Gold would have been nice, but the fact that they made it this far (and this close), is an automatic win for American Hockey. In hindsight, I take back my eagerness to see a Canada/Russia Gold Medal showdown…what we saw today was more than I could have ever asked for.

And what can I say? Congrats to Team Canada! One of the USA’s all-time best friends and allies. You guys deserve it! It was a storybook ending for not only the team, but the whole country, as well. And can I just add, I’m so damn happy that Marleau, Thornton, Heatley, and Boyle won. Maybe now that they know what it feels like to be champions, this can carry over to the regular season, eh? Time will tell. Again, congrats, from a sincere American Admirer.

Now off to watch D1! QUACK QUACK QUACK!

  4. Oh snap!

It’s Canada vs. Russia tomorrow. Hockey dreamland. What a dramatic turn of events. Many people thought these two would be competing for the gold, but now one of the two teams will be out of the tournament and won’t even be in contention for a medal. Can you say DRAMA???

Two hockey super teams! Crosby vs. Ovechkin! Crosby vs Malkin! Sharks vs Nabakov!

Is anyone as juiced for this game as I am (besides Canadians and Russians, of course?) I’m an American, but this game has me all tingly inside! Why I care so much, I don’t know. I think I’m more excited for this game than I was the Superbowl.

    Whatever the case, GO CANADA!!!

  5. My Amateur Attempt at Semi-Editorial Sports Writing

Thoughts on the USA-CAN hockey game:

    • First and foremost, how fuckin dumb is NBC? I’ve been holding back profanity for a while, but NBC deserves to be ridiculed. They already made one huge fuckup this year with the Conan-Leno deal, and then they pull this genius idea out of their ass. A game of this magnitude should have been broadcast nationwide, but no. The network decided to show Ice Dancing, instead, because it draws a larger female audience. Uhmm…yeah, so they decided to jip a bunch of viewers by showing this epic game on MSNBC (not in HD, at that), and basically, rob an entire demographic the chance to witness one of the most intense, exciting, and well-played hockey games of recent memory. Nevermind hockey games, this was one of the best games I’ve seen — ever. A handful of NHL All Stars playing at a level of competition that is unparalleled. I really feel bad for the people who didn’t get to watch it. For true sports fans, it was a matchup of a lifetime.
    • Congrats to Team USA! I’ll be honest, I kind of did want Canada to win, but I was not in any way, shape, or form gonna be disappointed if they lost. I don’t consider it being unpatriotic; I just happen to like the Canadian players more. I know I know, country pride should be put aside for personal preference, but I could care less. I cheer for who I want to cheer for. But even more so, I just wanted to see a well-played hockey game between two fierce competitors. I got that, and them some.
    • As far as Team Canada goes, I’m still pretty positive they’re going to win the gold medal. It’s just a gut instinct. Plus, they’re extremely talented and their depth is incredible. However, I did feel a sense of nervousness from the players on the ice today. They have so much pressure on them to win the gold, that I feel they almost over-played tonight. Not taking away any credit from Team USA, they played amazing. It’s apparent on paper, though, that Canada is the more talented team, and I think the pressure to win (every single game) got to them tonight. Maybe now that they lost, they don’t have to worry about the pressures of dominating the tournament and blowing out their opponents, which were the expectations of this team. Their only concern is winning the next game, until they hold that gold medal in their hands.

  6. And added to my list of completely unrelated interests…

Don’t ask why, but I’ve been extremely obsessed with hockey lately. Like, it goes LOST and then HOCKEY. Totally into it. I’m a Sharks fan (casual fan for the past 3-4 years), and now more-or-less begging my friend for his season tickets.

The reason I’ve become OBSESSED, though, is because of the two guys above: the golden child, pretty boy, goody-two-shoes Sidney Crosby & the badass, electric, rebel-rouser Alexander Ovechkin. Their dynamic is just so intriguing, and unlike a lot of hockey fans, I can’t come to grips with who I like more. I think I like both equally, for different reasons (slight edge maybe to Crosby because I think he’s a little Canadian hottie). But as far as talents go? It’s a wash, for me. Can’t wait to see these two compete in the Olympics! The Winter Olympics are usually a snoozefest for me, but I’m juiced this year, especially if its Team Canada vs Team Russia for the Gold Medal.

And yeah, sorry Team USA for going all Benedict Arnold on you, but I’m cheering for Team Canada. It’s got the entire Sharks’ first line, how could I not?!

  7. I don’t wanna get carried away because it doesn’t build houses, by itself. It doesn’t bring Fortune 500 companies, by itself, but it affords the citzenry of New Orleans a sense of comfort. And the ability to say to anyone else ‘Look, if we can win this thing, then nothing is beyond our reach.’ So I think in a lot of ways, it renews purpose and it renews optimism.

Tony Kornheiser on PTI, on what being Superbowl Champions means for the city of New Orleans

I couldn’t agree more. After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans needed a morale boost, and the Saints have helped acheive that. There’s still much to be fixed and rebuilt in this city, and their championship shouldn’t overshadow that fact. But at the very least, the city finally has something to be happy about. Congratulations, Saints!

  8. Watch Georges Laraque as he politely initiates a “fight” with Raitis Ivanans.

I was wondering how hockey fights started during games. Sometimes they’re spontaneous, other times they’re planned. But there’s nothing better than a “good luck, man” right before you beat the crap out of them. Sportsmanship at its finest!

  9. HANDS-TO-THE-FACE! FACE MASK! TUCK RULE!!!!! DAMN YOU WALT COLEMAN!

    Funny, but true story…

So amidst all my girlish tendencies, I actually have quite a tomboyish side to me…it’s more than quite, in fact. It’s a whole ‘notha side to me. My friend and I were discussing this the other day about how all we really have are guy friends. Don’t take it the wrong way, we have our fair share of girl friends, but we have A LOT of guy friends. And guy friends who just consider us — one of the guys, in a strictly platonic way. Seriously.

Put it this way: I spent all yesterday watching football, and the day before, even though I wasn’t near a television, I was compulsively checking my phone for the scores of both games. Sadly, only one of the teams I wanted to win won this weekend (Ravens). I’m a die-hard Raider fan, but unfortunately, it’s difficult to truly support this team with old man Al still around. I’m not a bandwagon fan, by any means, but I LOVE football, and I needed to find a way to stay interested.

To my benefit, I’ve actually been a casual Green Bay Packer fan for the past 10 years or so, and I’ve decided to latch onto them for the time being. Aaron Rodgers is a beast and C-Wood is still a Raider, to me. Needless to say, I was disappointed at the results yesterday, but not really upset…which brings me to this lovely article on yahoo today, and one of the comments below that mentioned two simple words: TUCK RULE. Yeah, I’m really one of those fans. The ones that couldn’t get over it. Still am not over it and probably will never be over it. The kind of fan that loses her lid when someone even mentions that game. The kind of fan that basically relives the moment everytime stupid MNF wants to show a replay of it just so they can hear Gruden’s feelings about it, which I’m sure is the same way most of the fans feel about it, which is that it was complete and utter BULLSHIT! That’s why I reveled in the beatdown of the Patriots. It was fan-friggin-tastic!

I bring all this up to really just plug a website that I write for. It’s a tongue-in-cheek take on weekly sports stories called The Sports Report Girl, and I’ve been writing articles as the NFL contributor for about 5 months now. I haven’t been writing for the past month or so because I’ve been busy with this whole moving business, but I’m putting out new stories this week, so check it if you want…or not. I write for a lot of different online websites, so anytime I have a new story, I’ll try to update.

Anyways, I’m pullin’ for the Saints now!!! Whooo!
