I’m doing it again, abandoning this blog…
What better way to try to restart it than by letting you know what’s been taking up my time? Lately, I’ve been spending my free time watching movies…lots of ‘em. I’ve been in a scary movie kick, as of late, and if you know me, I’m a wimp when it comes to scary movies. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve somehow mustered enough balls to watch scary movies now. So you’ll probably notice a good chunk of this list as films of that ilk. I have very eclectic tastes, so don’t be surprised if this list looks a little odd to you.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - I am a Potter fanatic, and yes, I stayed in line to watch the midnight showing. Let’s get a few things straight: I’m a huge fan of the movies, but an even bigger fan of the books. My favorite book was The Half-Blood Prince, but it was my least favorite film. The DH book was fantastic, and I had high hopes for this 2-part finale. I was extremely satisfied with Part 1, so I had even higher expectations for Part 2. The verdict? After watching this film, I can honestly say it’s my favorite film of the series, hands down. Absolutely breathtaking. I cried a lot, but it was the perfect way to end one of the most epic fantasy adventures of all time.
- Let The Right One In - My brother had been urging me to watch this movie for the past couple of years, but I was against it because it was a horror film. However, because I’m in a horror movie zone right now, I decided to give it a try. First of all, it’s not scary, at least I didn’t think it was. Gruesome, at times, but not really. Second of all, it’s a charming little love story involving vampires. No this isn’t Twilight. Twilight doesn’t hold a candle to this movie. With that said, this was quite possibly one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It was that good. Highly recommended.
- Let Me In - This is the American remake of Let The Right One In. Almost shot-for-shot the same. While it’s not quite as good as the original, this one isn’t bad either. A little scarier than LTROI, but still not really “horror”, in my opinion.
- 28 Days Later - Keeping with the scary movie motif, it actually started with my interest in zombie movies. This was the first zombie movie I watched that got me hooked on the genre. This was an excellent and original take on a zombie apocalypse, and probably one of the few zombie movies I can think of that did a really good job of keeping the human element present throughout the entire film.
- Dawn of the Dead (Remake) - Again, with the zombies. I never saw the original film, so I had nothing to compare this to. While not nearly as allegorical as 28 Days Later, I thought this film did its best to capture the spirit of the genre. This movie made me jump and scream a little more than 28DL, and it definitely had its gross out moments. But not bad.
- Zombieland - Great parody on the z-movie genre. I found it hilarious and well-acted. Too bad Jesse Eisenberg is gonna be typecast for the rest of his life.
- Dead Alive - Because of my near obsession with zombies, I asked some of my friends for the best movies out there. One of them suggested Dead Alive, Peter Jackson’s crown jewel before Lord of the Rings. This was nothing I was expecting at all. Very tongue-and-cheek humor and extremely bloody. When I say bloody, I mean, gallons and gallons of blood spilled. But it wasn’t realistic blood, it was very fake looking blood, but I believe that was also intentional. I think this movie also set the record for creating the most innovative ways for people to die. I don’t know if I would recommend it cause it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re a weirdo and obsessed with the zombie genre like I am, maybe you should give this a chance. But be prepared to see something you absolutely were not expecting.
- The Baby’s Room - Another scary movie. This was legitimately scary. I had my eyes closed a lot of the time. It was very Twilight Zone-esque, if you will. A very interesting twist at the end, but I figured it out :)
- Bronson - After Inception, I became the biggest Tom Hardy fangirl. He’s just beautiful to me. If god gave me the opportunity to create my perfect man, he would look, talk and act like Tom Hardy. One thing is not lost on me though, he is a FANTASTIC actor. His ridiculous good looks are just icing on the cake. His acting chops are shown at full force in Bronson. He plays the UK’s most deranged and violent criminal, Charles Bronson, and quite frankly, I’m surprised he didn’t receive an Academy Award for his performance. And the story, while disturbing, was fascinating.
- Wuthering Heights - Ok, the only reason I watched this movie was because Tom Hardy was in it :) What else can I say? He’s a babe. Also, Catherine (the main girl in the movie) is the most unsympathetic character ever. I did not feel bad for her at all.
- Iron Man - I’m usually pretty open to the superhero genre, but for some reason, Iron Man didn’t appeal to me. I was told it’s really good, and that I would like it, so I decided to give it a chance. I though it was good, not Dark Knight good, but it was an interesting look at an unconventional superhero.
- Iron Man 2 - Not as good as the first, but like the first, the CGI and technology is top notch. I was in awe looking at all the gadgets he had in his house. I want that!
- You Again - So my mama made me watch this, and said I would like it. It was cute, but nothing I would say you HAVE to watch. If you have nothing else to do and want to surrender your brain to mindless drivel, pop in this movie.
- Shutter Island - Inception is one of my most favorite movies ever, and many people were telling me this movie was similar to it. Yeah, that’s pretty much spot on. I thought this was a scary movie, but it wasn’t really. Plus, I LOVE Leo. And the film was pretty enjoyable as well.
That’s all I can think of. I’ve watched all these movies in the past 2 weeks or so. Yeah, I’m a movie whore right now. If you know of any good movies you think I should watch, send them my way. As you can tell, I have a pretty eclectic taste, so I’m open to anything, although I seem to have a soft spot for horror movies, zombies in particular, as well as anything with Tom Hardy in it raaawwrr he’s foxy. The next movies I want to see are Insidious and [REC], both extremely scary movies apparently. But I’m ready for it. Look up their trailers…if you dare…
